As models become more complex and engineers integrate frequent simulation into their design workflows, the need for greater compute power and advanced graphics at the desktop has continued to increase. The Dell Technologies Precision family of mobile and tower workstations have met these needs with a combination of top-shelf computing systems accelerated by NVIDIA RTX™ graphics. Now, with the release of the Dell Precision 7865 tower, the company has added one of the most powerful CPUs on the market into the mix.

In July, Dell announced that the 7865 would include the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series processors. Combined with NVIDIA RTX™ A6000 GPUs, the new tower provides a massive number of cores for multi-threaded CPU compute, along with advanced graphics resources for GPU-accelerated applications.

In this blog by Tom Tobul, Vice President and General Manager for the Performance PCs portfolio of products at Dell Technologies, “The Precision 7865 Tower is maximized for demanding, multi-application workloads and empowers users to tackle intensive, complex workstreams more efficiently. Bridging clock speed (valuable in interactive workflows such as computer-aided design) and multi-core computation (needed for workflows such as rendering or simulation), the Precision 7865 Tower powers data science, graphic design, engineering, imaging, and VR and AI initiatives without compromise.”

The Precision 7865 is one of the first major professional workstations to offer the Threadripper CPU. With up to 64 cores and 128 threads, it will be one of the fastest single-CPU workstation towers on the market for the engineering space. (The CPU is available with a variety of core counts, from 12 to 64.)

In addition to offering the largest available CPU core count, the Threadripper PRO processors also offer a very large L3 cache, which can improve application performance. In addition, the processors provide advanced performance for both multi-threaded and single-threaded application functionality, including improvements for tasks like part or assembly regeneration.

The 7865 also offers up to 56TB storage, optional Thunderbolt™ 3, and up to 1TB of DDR4 ECC memory with RMT Pro. The chassis design provides hexagonal venting to improve thermal efficiency and acoustic performance. The chassis is also 14% smaller than the Precision 7820 Tower.

With GPU support for up to the NVIDIA RTX A6000, the Precision 7865 provides enough GPU compute power for the types of multi-application workflows common in engineering and design environments. Using multiple graphics-intensive applications while simultaneously running email, office, and other apps can tax both the GPU and CPU. The NVIDIA RTX A6000 features 48GB of memory, and provides enough horsepower to manage demanding simulation, design and rendering applications.

The Precision 7865 was built to address the evolution of engineering workflows and software. Increasingly, users in this space are working with both traditional modeling and drawing tools, as well as simulation and rendering; some of these solutions are optimized for GPU acceleration, while others benefit from higher CPU clock speeds or higher core counts. The Precision 7865 offers the flexibility to support these complicated workflows without having to compromise.

The 7865 also supports Dell Optimizer for Precision software, leveraging artificial intelligence to optimize user workflows and application performance automatically.
