Session 3: Designing for the Entire Additive Manufacturing (AM) Process

Additive Manufacturing (AM) has gained acceptance in the industry but too often designers attempt to take parts that were designed for traditional manufacturing and directly convert them to be additively manufactured.

This approach can provide some benefit but the real value of AM is not realized. In addition there are things that can be done early in the design stage that assist with post-processing or evaluating parts.

This session will teach you how to design effectively for AM parts with the entire manufacturing process in mind. The talk will be focused on metal AM but will cover items that will also apply to plastic AM.

Speaker/Presenter: Mark Barfoot

Director, Additive Manufacturing Programs, EWI

About Mark

Mark Barfoot oversees EWI's growing additive manufacturing (AM) initiatives and helps EWI develop new AM technology opportunities. He directs the Additive Manufacturing Consortium (AMC), a national consortium of industry, government, academic and non-profit research organizations operated by EWI. He also manages EWI’s interest in the ASTM AM Center of Excellence (CoE), which involves supervision of the industry consortia focused on AM standards development, ASTM direct-funded projects, education and training, and project bids that leverage the ASTM CoE brand.

Mark has deep roots in the AM community. He spearheaded the use of AM at Christie Digital Systems where, in addition to growing the AM engineering team, he developed the company’s Hyphen business which provides additive manufacturing and testing services to local companies. Mark later broadened his knowledge of metal additive manufacturing and AM laboratory management at the University of Waterloo and at Cimetrix/Javelin, a Stratasys reseller, which provided him with further opportunities to understand a variety of AM industry applications. Mark began his career at Comdev where he gained experience qualifying satellite components for space applications. He is extensively involved with the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) and is a former president of the group.

Additive Manufacturing Resources

In this Special Focus Issue of Digital Engineering, learn about the latest innovations in additive manufacturing, including multi-material printing, post processing costs, print simulation, and more.

3D Printing started as an extremely expensive, niche method of manufacturing that held few advantages over more traditional methods, and over the course of its lifetime became much more advanced.

This paper will discuss the tolerances and the effect that machine or mechanical tolerance of the equipment has on overall part tolerance.
